Original Watercolor Lover's Eye Miniature Painting, Resin Gold Frame with Pearls, Rhinestones (3"x3.5")

LOVER'S EYE "ISABELLA" is an original hand-painted watercolor painting complete with a gold resin rectangular frame that has been dulled down with dark wax to give it an authentic antique look -- plus, I added gray and white faux pearls and turquoise rhinestones to the frame. This piece including frame measures 3"x3.5"; the actual small painting of the green female eye itself measures 1.5"x2" and was done on 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper with professional grade watercolor paints. I finished it off with several protective layers of clear wax over the painting itself, giving it a bit of a sheen. It is signed on the back by me, the artist.

"Here's lookin' at you, kid!" Eye miniatures or "Lovers' Eyes" date back to the Georgian era when a painting of the eye of a spouse, loved one or child (usually done in watercolor on ivory) was commissioned for sentimental reasons and sometimes fashioned into brooches or pendants in richly adorned frames. On the shadier side of things, as public romantic gestures were frowned upon in the 1700s (especially the elicit ones), the Lovers' Eyes became a fashionable way of clandestine flirting amongst the British elite. (Cheeky monkeys!) Queen Victoria later revived the fad in 1840 when she had her Royal Miniaturist, Sir William Charles Ross, create small eye portraits of her children, friends and relatives.
